The Labrador Retriever’s story begins on the rugged shores of Newfoundland, Canada, where its ancestors—St. John's water dogs—worked alongside fishermen, retrieving nets, ropes, and fish from icy waters. In the early 1800s, British nobles visiting Canada recognized the dogs’ exceptional work ethic and brought them back to England. There, the breed was refined and standardized into what we now know as the Labrador Retriever.
